§ 34Industry file · Podcast

Podcast names you can find by ear.

A podcast is found by people who heard its name once, in a car, from a friend, at a pace they could not stop to spell. That rules out puns that need visuals and rewards a name that says what it is about, in your own voice, in a way that is easy to type into a podcast app.

§ 01Form BN-1

Write your own, for a podcast.

The industry is already filled in. Say what is particular about yours (the street, the customer, the thing you do better) and you get twelve more names with their domains checked, each typeset as a brand.

§ 03House rules

Naming a podcast: what to weigh.

  1. R.01

Say it aloud to a stranger

Tell a friend the name once and ask them to find it in their podcast app. If they cannot, your growth by word of mouth is capped.

  2. R.02

    Say what it is about

Podcast search is mostly keyword based. A name or subtitle with the topic (money, parenting, travel) helps people searching for that subject find you without having heard of you.

  3. R.03

Check the apps, not just the domain

Search Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube for the name, and the handles on Instagram and TikTok. A show with an identical name in your genre is the real problem.

  4. R.04

Make it work as cover art

The name sits on a square image the size of a stamp on a phone. Short words in a large font stay legible; long names turn into grey texture.

  5. R.05

    Plan for the long run

A name tied to a season, a guest or a fad dates quickly. Choose a name that will still make sense in a hundred episodes.

DoPatterns that work

  • A route or pace phrase: Long Way Round, Wrong Turn, Late Shift.
  • A table-top or domestic ritual: Second Cup, Dinner Table Rules.
  • A document or detail image: The Fine Print, Loose Threads.
  • A short prompt to the guest: Say More, Off the Clock.

Don’tThings to avoid

  • Names that rely on a pun that only works in writing.
  • A name that is the host’s name only, unless you are already known.
  • “Podcast”, “Show” or “Talks” in the title; it wastes characters on the art and in search.
  • A name too similar to a major show in your genre.
Q.01Should a podcast name include the topic?
Where possible, yes, either in the name or the subtitle. Podcast apps rank by keywords, and listeners often search by subject. A short distinctive name with a clear subtitle gives you both memorability and search.
Q.02Can two podcasts have the same name?
Technically yes, since podcast directories do not enforce uniqueness, but it is a poor idea. You will fight for search results and risk a trademark claim. Search the apps and the trademark register before you commit.
Q.03How long should a podcast name be?
Short enough to be said easily and to read on cover art at thumbnail size: two to four words is a good range. Longer subtitles can carry the description.
Q.04Do I need a domain for a podcast?
A simple website is useful for show notes, and the domain makes it easy to share. If the .com is taken, adding fm, show or podcast is common, but make sure the name is easy to say when you dictate the URL.
