№ 05Radio test · word of mouth

Say it once. Can they spell it?

A name that cannot be spelled from hearing it cannot be found. Play it to a friend with the screen covered, and count how many get it right.

The test: a listener hears the name once, with at most two replays, then types it. We compare their spelling to yours, letter by letter. A spelling that is off by one letter is a different website.

§ 05.1How it works

Three steps, no sign-up.

  1. Step 01

    Pick a name

Choose one from your shortlist or type it in. Turn on Cover the screen so the name stays hidden from the listener.

  2. Step 02

    Hand over the phone

The page speaks the name once in an English voice you choose, with up to two replays. The listener types what they heard, without seeing it.

  3. Step 03

    Read the count

Each attempt is HEARD or MISSED, with their spelling beside the real one. After a few listeners you get a result like 3 of 5 survived, plus the mishearings.

§ 05.2Inquiries

Fair questions.

Q.01Why test a name by ear?
Most first contact with a small business is spoken: a recommendation, a podcast, a call, a radio ad. If a listener cannot guess the spelling, they cannot find you, and the search lands on someone else. The test shows that before you print anything.
Q.02How is a spelling marked HEARD or MISSED?
HEARD means the typed name matches yours once capitals, spaces and punctuation are ignored, so north wind and co counts for Northwind & Co. Anything else is MISSED, and we show how far off it was as a percentage of the name's length.
Q.03My browser will not speak. Can I still use it?
Yes. When the browser has no speech engine, the page switches to say-it-yourself mode: you read the name aloud, the listener types it blind, and the scoring is identical. You can also choose that mode on purpose to test your own accent. The runs stay on this device.
