§ T.6Tools · Abbreviation check

What is left when the name is cut?

See your name's initials, how it clips in an app icon label, a browser tab, an email address and an SMS sender, and whether the acronym spells something you would not want on a sign.

Cut the name down

№ 0000 · Nothing on file

Type the full name as you would print it. We show what survives.

§ T.6.1How it works

Three steps, no sign-up.

  1. Step 01

    Enter the name

Use the full legal or trading name as you would print it. The check starts from exactly what you type.

  2. Step 02

    See where it gets cut

The same name is set into an app icon (12 characters), a browser tab, a hello@ address and an SMS sender ID (11 characters). What is lost shows struck through.

  3. Step 03

    Check the acronym

Customers shorten long names to initials. We compare yours against a short list of letter groups that read as something else, and warn when the initials are too short to be found.

§ T.6.2Inquiries

Fair questions.

Q.01Where do the limits come from?
App icon labels are clipped by the phone's home screen at roughly 12 characters. SMS alphanumeric sender IDs are limited to 11 characters of letters, digits and spaces, and are not supported in every country. Browser tab width varies, so we use about 24 characters as a typical figure.
Q.02Does a clipped name mean I need a shorter one?
Not always. It means you need a short form for those places. Many businesses keep the full name and register a short sender ID or label, as long as the first characters still say who you are.
Q.03How is an unfortunate acronym found?
We compare your initials against a short, plain list of letter groups that read as rude words, expletives or other things, including as a fragment of a longer acronym. It catches the obvious ones. It cannot catch every one, in every language.
Q.04Why are two-letter initials a problem?
Thousands of businesses share them. They are close to impossible to search for and easy to mistake for someone else, so customers will not find you by them even if they use them.
