Can they say it, hear it, spell it?

Score any business name for how it sounds and spells out loud. See where it loses points, what people will type instead, and how it looks set in eight different voices.

Type a name above. The score updates as you type.

§ T.2.1How it works

Three steps, no sign-up.

  1. Step 01

    Enter the name

Type a name you already have or one you are weighing. The score is worked out in your browser. Only the live domain lookup sends the web address to our server.

  2. Step 02

    Read the reasons

The score starts at 10 and loses points for length, syllables, consonant pile-ups, silent letters and other things a listener cannot know from sound alone. Each deduction is listed in words.

  3. Step 03

    Keep it or test it

Save the name to your shortlist, hear it in the Radio Test, or see it on a door in In the Wild. The stamp is a summary; the notes are the argument.

§ T.2.2Inquiries

Fair questions.

Q.01How is the Say-it score worked out?
It is a set of rules of thumb, not a dictionary. Names start at 10 and lose points for length (past five letters), three or more syllables, accents and special letters, unusual letter pairs, four-consonant clusters, vowel runs, digits, hyphens, and spellings a listener cannot guess, such as silent letters, ph for f, or a final -ie versus -y. The result is tuned for English-speaking customers hearing a name once, so names in other scripts show n/a.
Q.02Does a low score mean I should drop the name?
No. It means people will hesitate. Some very good names score 6 because they are unusual on purpose. If you keep one, own the likely misspellings as domains and be ready to spell it on the phone.
Q.03What are the misspellings for?
They are how someone might type the name after hearing it once. They are the first spellings to check as domains and social handles, and the first ones to put to a real listener in the Radio Test.
Q.04Is my name stored?
Only if you press Save to shortlist, and then only in this browser. The score, the wordmarks and the domain lookup need no account.
