№ 07In the wild · see it working

Put it on a door. Then decide.

Eight places a name has to work, mocked up with yours: the sign above the shop, the card in a hand, the icon on a phone.

§ 07.1Exhibits A to H

Before you file it, live with it.

A name looks different on a door than in a list. Pick one, say what the business is, and watch it move into a sign, a card, a phone and an invoice.

§ 07.2How it works

Three steps, no sign-up.

  1. Step 01

    Pick the name

Choose from your shortlist or type any name, with an optional tagline and descriptor.

  2. Step 02

    Say what it is

Choose shop, café, studio, software or trade, and a wordmark voice. The mock-ups change to fit: a tote, a coffee cup or a van.

  3. Step 03

    Look at it working

Eight exhibits update at once: sign, card, app icon, browser, invoice, email and social, merch, and a store listing. Save any of them as a PNG.

§ 07.3Inquiries

Fair questions.

Q.01Why look at a name on a sign and a phone before choosing it?
A name in a list is just letters. On a door it has to fit a fascia, on a phone it has to survive being shortened under an icon, and on an invoice it has to sit next to an address. Long names, names with an ampersand and names with a category word behave very differently, and it is cheaper to find that out now than after the signwriter has been paid.
Q.02Will a long name like Brightside Bakehouse fit?
Yes. Every line of text is measured in your browser and shrunk until it fits its space, and category words such as Bakehouse drop to a small line under the name, the way a real sign would set them. Try Marrow, Brightside Bakehouse and Northwind & Co to see the range.
Q.03Are these real logos, and can I download them?
They are mock-ups made from type, shapes and a monogram of your initials, not a finished logo. Each exhibit has a PNG button that saves it as an image, drawn in your browser with nothing uploaded. The domain shown is only checked, never registered.
